Early in his career, he painted with the name Paul Von Eschenbach, his German name that he legally changed to Ashbrook in 1917. Ashbrook was born in New York City in 1867 and in 1885, attended the Art Students League as a student of William Merritt Chase. Ashbrook had a studio at the 10th Street Studio Building, having started his career in New York as an illustrator for Charles Klackner. In 1900, he moved to Cincinnati where from 1900 to 1918, he was the Director of the Design Department for the Henderson Lithographic Company, and took classes at the Cincinnati Art Academy from Frank Duveneck.
