The subjects that always fascinated him were people, often working class men and women that he encountered in his mother's Torquay hotel or his lodgers while he was running a guest house in London. In the 1980s, he moved to the Oxfordshire village of Shenington. There he earned money as a farm laborer and as an expert and restorer of Oriental rugs, until he was rediscovered as an artist. He subsequently exhibited at Leighton House in 1985 and the Roy Miles Gallery in 1992. After his death, the Brian Sinfield Gallery held a retrospective of his work in 2003.
