The French-born Impressionist painter Pierre Adolf Valette is best remembered as the tutor of L.S. Lowry and for his atmospheric street scenes of Edwardian Manchester which fill a gallery in the City Art Gallery. He trained at the Ecole de Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux but moved to Manchester School of Art in 1907. He trained at the Ecole de Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux but moved to Manchester School of Art in 1907. He returned to France in 1928 and settled in Blace in Beaujolais.
