The son and student of Jean-Baptiste Tetar van Elven, Pierre Tetar Van Elven studied at the Academy of Fine Art in Amsterdam and then at the Academy of Art in The Hague. He moved to Paris in 1856 where he painted watercolors, as well as a variety of subjects in oil. He was particularly accomplished in genre scenes, and urban landscapes.
