In 1923 he was a co-founder of the Stuttgart Secession and joined the Vereinigung der Freunde schwäbischer Grafik [Association of Friends of Swabian Graphic Art], which broke up in 1937 after a dispute concerning Nägele's wife' Jewish faith. It was their marriage, illegal under Nazi law, which caused the breakup of the Vereinigung der Freunde schwäbischer Grafik and his eventual emigration to the United States.
