He studied at the School of Design in Edinburgh and later at Julian's Academy in Paris. Hope was elected as an Associate of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1911 and became a full Member in 1925. He was Chairman of the Society of Scottish Artists in 1910. Hope's diverse body of work included painting landscapes, figures, portraits, and large decorative schemes. He undertook notable commissions such as the ballroom of Manderston House and the "Blue Blanket" in Edinburgh City Chambers. His subject matter often drew inspiration from Scottish ballads and songs. Hope passed away in Edinburgh in 1936.
