He lived in Belfast, teaching in various high schools and institutes there, including the Belfast College of Art where he taught Terence Flanagan and Basil Blackshaw. Toogood was a member of the artist group Ulster Unit and retrospectives were held of his work by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland (1978) and the Bell Gallery (1989).
