His parents were sheep farmers, who returned to England following the drought in Australia in the 1880s. On his return to England, he studied art at St. John's Wood Art School and then the Herkomer School of Art at Bushey under Sir Hubert von Herkomer, RA - he studied alongside Lucy Kemp Welch.
