Whilst Samuel became qualified to teach art, his passion for painting outdoors led him away from this. McLarnon opened a studio in Main Street Larne and exhibited there annually for 28 years. He was a founding member of Larne Art Club, helped found the Ulster Watercolour Society and was a life member of Carnlough Art Club.
