Sudjojono (1913-1986), established the Young Indonesian Artists' Association. Early in his career, he painted in the realist style, often with revolutionary themes. After his release from Dutch military detention in 1950, he adopted a less politicized artistic language, painting reclusively for almost 16 years until 1966. As a pioneer generation artist, Soedibio's oeuvre has yet to gain its rightful place in Indonesian art history largely because, during this period of reclusion, he inevitably missed the art discourse in which other Indonesian artists participated. After his release from Dutch military detention in 1950, he adopted a less politicized artistic language, painting reclusively for almost 16 years until 1966. As a pioneer generation artist, Soedibio's oeuvre has yet to gain its rightful place in Indonesian art history largely because, during this period of reclusion, he inevitably missed the art discourse in which other Indonesian artists participated. Best known for his intricate and almost decorative style of art inspired by Javanese mysticism and folklore, Soedibio was also influenced by Cubism and Fauvism.
