Woldemar Hau was a German Baltic portrait painter who worked in the Biedermeier style. He was born to the painter Johannes Hau and grew up in the German community of Tallinn. He studied with Karl von Kügelgen and was offered the opportunity to paint the grand duchesses at the age of sixteen. He worked as a freelance painter and travelled extensively through Italy and Germany before being appointed court painter, spending the next three decades painting the royal family and their associates. He died on March 23, 1895 in St. Petersburg.
