Alistair Grant was a British artist born in 1925 to an English father and French mother. He spent much of his childhood in Étaples along the northern French coast, which became a constant source of artistic inspiration for him. Grant trained at Birmingham School of Art and the Royal College of Art in London, where he later became a pioneer in mixed media techniques while teaching printmaking. Although he was initially known for his representational works, from the mid 1960s, Grant moved towards abstraction. His works are characterized by bold color, strong design, and expressive painterly brushwork, and he is particularly known for his depictions of the Normandy landscape of the north French coast at Le Touquet, Étaples, and Boulogne
