Anton Burger was born in 1824, in Frankfurt, Germany. From 1842 to 1846, he studied at the Städel Art Institute. At the urging of his teacher Philipp Veit, Anton left for Munich, but returned to Frankfurt, two years later. In 1853, he undertook a study trip to Paris, where he met Camille Corot and Gustave Courbet. Together with Jakob Fürchtegott Dielmann, Anton founded the Kronberg painters' colony in 1861.
