She was an Arawa Chieftainess, a member of the Tuhourangi tribe living at Whakarewarewa. The sister of the Arawa chief Haerehuka, Kapi Kapi survived the 1886 Tarawera eruption and witnessed the assault of Pukeroa Pa at Ohinemutu.
