Charles Henri Joseph Cordier was the unruly child of a family of Cambrai. After mediocre studies, he studied the studio of sculptor Louis Bougron Lille. He left for Paris in 1844 and joined the studio of François Rude in 1846. This is where he met Seid Enkess, black freed slave who became his model. He exhibited Enkess Seid's bust at the Salon. He left for Paris in 1844 and joined the studio of François Rude in 1846. This is where he met Seid Enkess, black freed slave who became his model. He exhibited Enkess Seid's bust at the Salon.
