Welch trained as a painter at Goldsmiths and continued to work as an artist throughout his writing career. He published his first book, 'Maiden Voyage', in 1943 and the following year wrote the novel 'In Youth is Pleasure', which garnered him success and prestige as an author. Welch trained as a painter at Goldsmiths and continued to work as an artist throughout his writing career.
