As a child, he began carving images and then studied fine art at Colorado State University in Fort Collins and at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley. He worked as a portrait painter of prize-winning livestock and after college as a technical illustrator in the defense industry. He discovered he was much more interested in working in an impressionist-abstract style than in realistic. In the early 1990s, he decided to pursue what most interested him, and he began designing masks, sculpting and painting and by 1999 had completed more than 85 sculptures and over 150 landscapes in oil.
