He attended the prestigious Boston Latin School before entering Harvard University in 1846. After graduation, and from 1850 to 1874, Dickinson taught drawing and painting in the Boston Public School System as a Professor of Drawing until 1874 when Dickinson and his wife, the former Lucia M. Hunt, of Newburyport, relocated to Paris, France, where both studied the new French art and painted landscapes and genre scenes in their studio until 1888, when Lucia died in Paris.
