Gilbert Margeson, a marine painter, was born in Nova Scotia and became known as the Dean of the Rockport Colony, where he was a long-time member of the Rockport Artist Association and in 1873, was the first artist to set up a studio in Rockport on the eastern shore of Cape Ann. Frost came to Rockport, and other artists followed with the word spreading of the beauties of that area.
