Goh Beng Kwan was born in 1937. Goh Beng Kwan is a pioneer for Singapore modern artists and is known for his influence on the development of abstract expressionist art in Singapore. He trained under the tutelage of masters Chen Wen His and Cheong Soo Pieng, Goh then furthered his training in oil painting at the Arts Student"s League of New York (1962-66). It was then that he began to experiment with the concept of abstract expressionism, integrating the principles of Chinese ink painting and calligraphic brush strokes with abstract art. In 1989, Goh was awarded the Cultural Medallion for his contributions to the Visual Arts scene in Singapore.
