Hattie Saussy was born on March 17, 1890, in Savannah, Georgia, to Rachel Louise (Shivers) and Joachim Radcliffe Saussy III. Her immediate family included a sister who died at the age of two and a younger brother, Rad, who died in 1915 at the age of twenty-three.
