Henri Adolphe Schaep was born in Mechelen. His family moved to Antwerp when he was two years old. Since the age of twelve, he attended the Academy of Fine Arts there together with Egide Linnig (1821-1860). The paintings of the Dutchman Schaep, who was already celebrated in his lifetime as a highly valued marine painter with a special technical skill, are still represented in Belgian museums such as Antwerp, Brussels and Osstende.
