Horatio Gordon Robley was a British soldier, watercolorist and noted collector of Maori heads. Robley was born in 1840. Robley frequently sketched and painted scenes from his military duties, which carried him to exotic locales around the world. He had an expertise in riflery and in 1871 transferred to the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. Robley wrote the history of the regiment. The artist passed away in 1930.
