Irmin Henkel, born in Germany in 1921, was a self-taught artist known for his diverse oeuvre encompassing still life, landscape, and portraiture, including nudes. In addition to his artistic pursuits, Henkel was a qualified orthopaedic surgeon who practiced in Germany and later in South Africa after settling in Pretoria in 1951. His artistic skills led him to become the preferred choice for official government portraits from the 1950s to the 1970s.
