Johan 'Mari' Henri ten Kate was born in 1831 in The Hague. He studied art at the Academy of Arts in the Hague, where his brother, nine years his senior, was his professor. At the age of 19, he moved to Amsterdam, where he remained until 1871. In 1852, he became member of the Amsterdam Royal Academy of Arts.
