Since then John has exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy, Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, Royal Scottish Society for Painters in Watercolour and Paisley Art Institute. He was elected an artist member of the Glasgow Art Club in 1979 and in 1986 he was elected a member of Group 81 Artists who exhibited regularly at the McLellan Galleries in Glasgow.
