Theiss began painting in 1901 and remained a self-taught artist except for ten lessons with Lorenzo Latimer and criticism from Antony Anderson. He painted landscapes of the Sonoma Hills and Yosemite until 1904 when he moved to Los Angeles into a studio-home at 1308 E. 46th Street. Active in southern California until the mid-1920s, he married Theodora Stumpf of Springfield, OH in 1925 and settled there. Theiss was the subject of a lunacy hearing in Clark County (Ohio) in 193.
