According to the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie, Amsterdam, he was the son of a cloth merchant and later he became a pupil of the landscape painter Gerrit Toorenburgh (1732?/1785) and he worked in Haarlem between 1772-1795, including a period as drawing master for the Tekenschool voor Kunstambachten.
