He started by displaying his artwork in different collective exhibitions. Soon, however, he abandoned this formative stage to move into a more influential environment at the Museum of Abstract Art in Cuenca. There, he worked in some more abstract pieces with reference to artists such as Oteiza and Brancusi. In 1987, Asensio moved to Madrid where he started to contact gallerists and critics of the Spanish capital.
