Mabel Young was the student and second wife of Paul Henry RHA. Born on the Isle of Wight, she came to Dublin in 1914 to assist her sister, who was then housekeeper of the Shelbourne Hotel. The two sisters remained at the Shelbourne throughout the vicissitudes of the 1916 Rising and the ensuing Civil War, during which, according to Elizabeth Bowen, a bullet was fired into Mabel's sitting room, narrowly missing her pet canary. Other exhibitions were held at Combridge's and in the Shelbourne, and she was included in the 1953 Contemporary Irish Art exhibition at Aberystwyth in Wales.
