After being a pupil of his father, Franz Knoller († 1773), then of Ignaz Pogl, Martin Knoller studied his art at the Academy of Vienna (1751 -1753) under Paul Troger (1698 -1762) and Michael Angelo Unterberger (1695 -1758), whose taste for religious Baroque painting influenced the artist's first commission for the parish church built by Franz de Paula Penz in Anras (eastern Tyrol), where he painted a fresco depicting the Glory of St. Stephen (1754).
