Mateo Saldaña was born in 1875 in Teocaltiche, Jalisco. From his childhood he proved to have talent for art and in 1892 he entered the Academy of San Carlos. He had teachers such as Felix Parra, Santiago Rebull and José María Velasco. In 1894 he retained a first place prize in the academy, where years later he worked as a drawing teacher. He also worked at the National Museum of Archeology, History and Ethnology.
