Chikutô (or Chikudô) Nakabayashi was born in Nagoya. He was the son of a doctor, and already when he was 20 he established his own studio. In 1803 he moved to Kyoto together with Yamamoto Baiitsu (1783-1856). Apart from being one of the best Nanga* painters of his age he was also known as its main theorist.
