Both Dick McIntyre and Kroghie Andresen have researched Burgess and state that, based on a 1957 interview, Burgess' father died when he was five and he was orphaned by age nine. At twelve, Burgess is said to have lost the sight of one eye when a neighborhood girl threw sand in his face.
