Octavio Medellin was born in San Luis Potosi, Mexico in 1907. After moving to San Antonio, Texas, Medellin attended the San Antonio School of Art. Then moved to Chicago for classes at the Chicago Art Institute. In 1929 he traveled to Mexico to study native and primitive crafts. Upon returning to San Antonio along with a small group of artist, Medellin started the La Vallita Art Gallery where he taught sculpture from 1934-1937. Then moved to Chicago for classes at the Chicago Art Institute. In 1929 he traveled to Mexico to study native and primitive crafts.
