In 1953 Brüning, together with Hoehme, Winfred Gaul, Bernard Schultze and KO Götz formed the "group of artists Niederrhein", which later became "Group 53". He is one of the most inventive protagonists of the young German art in the period of change after 1945 and enjoyed one of the most important representatives of German Informel in the 1950's and international reputation. From 1969 until his untimely death in 1970, Bruning held a chair for free painting at the Dusseldorf Art Academy.
