He felt a kinship to the Mediterranean area and its people and during a stay in Positano in 1924 he received the appointment as a professor at the Cologne Werkschulen. In the wake of the new repressive cultural and political climate, he decided in 1931 to leave Cologne and emigrate to Switzerland to Ronco sopra Ascona on Lake Maggiore.
