His mother was Helen Brough, formerly lady's maid to the Duchess of Hamilton; his father John Cameron, coachman to the Hamiltons. Brough was raised by maternal relatives on a farm on the outskirts of Aberdeen. Brough was raised by maternal relatives on a farm on the outskirts of Aberdeen.
