He was a plein air impressionist, and later his styled evolved to post-impressionism, expressionism and cubism. Carey also did lithographs in representational and abstracts styles. He was associated with Oregon artists C. S. Price and Charles Heaney. Carey spent some time in Santa Barbara, California.
