He devoted himself to art in his spare time, otherwise he worked as a lathe operator, mason, fireman, glassworks worker, delivery man and construction worker. Rudolf Dzurko was born in 1941 into a "gypsy" family in Pavlovice in eastern Slovakia. At the age of four, he and his father went to work in northern Bohemia in places after the displaced Germans. He devoted himself to art in his spare time, otherwise he worked as a lathe operator, mason, fireman, glassworks worker, delivery man and construction worker. He made a living from many professions, and did not take part in the first exhibitions until the 1970s, when he was invited to ethnographic exhibitions such as The Art of the Czechoslovak Gypsies or Our Fellow Citizens.
