Tao was born in Jiansu, China. His grandfather was in the business of Chinese calligraphy and painting, Tao had enjoyed and learning them since young age. At age 15, Tao was learning Chinese calligraphy and inscription under the famous teacher Tang BoChien and Tang ChongFang. He joined Shanghai Painting Association in 1924.
