Siegwald Johnnes Dahl was born in 1827, the son of the Norwegian landscape painter Johan Christian Clausen Dahl and friend of Casper David Friedrich. From 1842-46 he attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden, followed by study trips to Paris, London and Norway. He was made an honorary member of the Dresden Academy in 1864.
