In 1982 he was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship and studied at the Pratt Institute in New York. He was included in the exhibition The Vigorous Imagination: New Scottish Art in Edinburgh in 1987. He was Artist-in-Residence at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney in 1990.
