Sydney Harpley was a British sculptor born in Fulham in 1927. He left school at 14 to become an electrician, but later enrolled in sculpture studies at Hammersmith School of Art and the Royal College of Art. Harpley's fascination with movement and flight, inspired by his time working on an American air base, played a role in his sculpting career. He often depicted single female figures on swings, hammocks, and in acrobatic poses. Harpley was also influenced by Egyptian art and sculpture, which he encountered during his National Service in Cairo. He first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1954 and became a full Royal Academician in 1981.
