For manual therapy, he took up line illustration which soon led him to becoming one of the most widely read, left-handed newspaper artists in the U.S. He began his career with the San Francisco Bulletin at age 14 and in 1903 went to work for Hearst papers in New York where he gained fame for his sports cartoons.
