Yunizar was born on June 4, 1971 in Talawi, West Sumatra, Indonesia. He studied southeast Asian art at the Indonesian Fine Art High School in Padang, graduating in 1988; and the Indonesian Institute of Arts in Jakarta, graduating in 1993.
