He initially worked as a village school teacher before turning to painting at the suggestion of Franz von Lenbach. Müller-Wischin studied at the painting school of Heinrich Knirr in Munich and was largely self-taught artistically. He undertook study trips to Italy and was awarded the title of professor in 1925.
