From 1961 until 1974 his work required him to travel extensively in the Southeast for Gulf Oil. In 1964 Smith began to paint as a hobby, trying a variety of techniques and experimenting with form, style, color and design. He began developing his realistic primitive style, and in May of 1974 obtained a license to set up his easel in Jackson Square, Louisiana.
