After his early education in London, Bennett worked as a jeweler while he studied fine art and composition in a number of small schools in London. In 1889, Bennett married Catherine Avery and moved for a brief time to East Hyde, Bedfordshire. In 1889, Bennett married Catherine Avery and moved for a brief time to East Hyde, Bedfordshire. The 1901 Census lists him and his wife as residents of East Hyde, Bedfordshire, 25 miles northwest of London, where they resided with his in-laws. While mainly self-taught, during this period Bennett began to submit paintings to the Royal Academy. Four of his landscapes were exhibited at the Royal Academy before 1880.
