Arthur William Devis was born in Preston, Lancashire, England in 1763. He received his first instruction in art from his father, Arthur Devis, a painter of conversation pieces, with whom he is sometimes confused. He made rapid progress, and obtained at an earlier age than usual the silver medal from Royal Academy and more importantly the good opinion of Sir Joshua Reynolds. When he was twenty years old he was appointed by the East India Company as draftsman to accompany Capt. Wilson on a voyage... Read full biography

He made rapid progress, and obtained at an earlier age than usual the silver medal from Royal Academy and more importantly the good opinion of Sir Joshua Reynolds. When he was twenty years old he was appointed by the East India Company as draftsman to accompany Capt. Wilson on a voyage around the world. Their vessel was wrecked and they had to endure many hardships. Devis returned to England in 1795. He painted several historical pictures for Mr. Alex Davidson, also an excellent portrait of Nelson.
